Trend already says it delivers a fingerprint for newly discovered viruses within two hours, and has a service level agreement to back this up in its larger customers. But the company this week introduced features to mitigate attacks during those hours.

[When a virus is discovered] customers wait for a pattern to be created, said product group manager Richard Ku. This could take from 45 minutes to two hours. For the customer that is a critical period.

Ku said Trend’s OfficeScan Corporate Edition 5.5 and ServerProtect 5.5 for Windows now have a feature called Outbreak Protection Service, which could provide a defense against a virus attack in ten to fifteen minutes.

The regular anti-virus service forwards virus signatures to desktops, where incoming data is scanned for infection. Added on, OPS delivers a set of polices that identify viruses’ transmission mechanisms and shut down ways for them to get in.

For example, if a worm is copying itself to a certain directory or section of memory, or over a certain port, OPS could block access to those areas of the computer until a virus pattern has been created and installed on users’ desktops.

Ku said that the OPS service will be offered as a free add-on for customers for six months, while the company evaluates potential business models.

Also new with the 5.5 releases comes the ability to clean up after a successful virus attack. The system can automatically deploy cleaning templates to all instances of the software. By fixing each device simultaneously, the chance of re-infection is reduced.

Finally, OfficeScan 5.5 can be integrated with SecureClient, the VPN client application made by Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. SecureClient can check to make sure remote users have up-to-date virus definitions before allowing them to connect.
