As expected, Transarc Corp, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has announced it is now shipping a Distributed File System component for use with the Open Software Foundation’s Distributed Computing Environment on SunSoft Inc’s Solaris. Transarc sells basic Distributed Computing Environment services for SunOS and Solaris Unixes and resells IBM Corp’s Distributed Computing Environment implementation for AIX. Distributed File System licences under Solaris start at $3,000 per server. The client File System code comes in Transarc’s $300 Distributed Computing Environment base services licence. A File System cell also requires a cell directory and security service, priced at $2,500 each, which brings the total cost to $8,300.
