TRADE MAKES NONSENSE OF STAND-OFF

By CBR Staff Writer

Trade is rapidly making a nonsense of the bitter stand-off between the Peoples Republic of China and the Republic of China as Taiwan likes to call itself: immediately following on the Peking deal, AT&T Co and the Taiwan government agreed to co-operate in developing the island’s telecommunications industry and establish joint ventures to exploit the global market, Reuter reports from Taipei; AT&T plans to form a strategic alliance with Taiwan’s Economics Ministry to manage technology transfers, win contracts and operate manufacturing projects, with two ventures, one making several hundred million dollars of telecommunications equipment a year, the other providing financing and marketing support, will be established this year; they will seek business in Asian countries and other areas that are spending large sums to modernise their systems.
