The trade group’s latest survey showed the number of IT professionals in the country’s IT software and services industry will hit 650,000 by March this year, a rise of 24.4% on the year. Almost 205,000 of these are working in the IT software exports industry, 160,000 in IT enabled services, 25,000 in the domestic software market, and 260,000 in user organizations.

The group predicted that the industry would require 1.1 million professionals by 2008, but that if current intake patterns persist, the supply of workers would be 885,000. The group has called for action to fill gaps in education, and for the private and public sectors to work together to offer intensive training on specific skills. It emphasized the added need for linguistic skills in the services sector.

Nasscom said there was a shift away from hiring freshers towards hiring professionals with more domain specific skill sets and business analysts with programming skills. It said this suggested India was tapping more high value service lines.

Salaries increased 8% on average last year, Nasscom found, with most companies adopting variable pay to link salaries to revenues and control costs.
