Corning has unveiled tougher Gorilla Glass 5 with better optical clarity, touch sensitivity, and damage resistance.
The new glass has been designed to improve screen protection against damage from everyday drops.
The company claims to have conducted rigorous test drops on rough surfaces and claimed to be four times better than the glasses offered by competitors.
Corning says that the strength of Gorilla Glass 5 has been built upon the performance of its previous products.
It says that phone screens have become the primary interface which is used for viewing as well as for giving inputs through touch. But users often need to extra careful to protect the screen.
Corning quoted a study conducted in 11 countries and said that over 85% of smartphone users have dropped their phones at least once a year and 55% have dropped their phones three times or more.
More than 60% of smartphone owners reported dropping their phones from heights ranging between waist and shoulder.
Corning Gorilla Glass vice president and general manager John Bayne said: “With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels.
“Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses.
“With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement.”
The company has used glass science and fusion manufacturing to make it tough and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 claimed to survive from drop up to 80% of time when the device falls face-down from 1.6m on rough surfaces.
Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is expected to be available with devices from later this year.
