Total shipments home and abroad of personal computers by Japanese manufacturers rose 12% by value but fell by 11% by volume in the three months to December 31, compared with the same period in 1986, according to figures from the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association: the number shipped was put at 562,000, but the unit value was much higher so that the machines were worth $1,390m; value of domestic sales rose 18%, but export value rose by just 1% to $438m, 31% of the total; ships to the US crashed 40% in value, a reflection of the 100% punitive tariff.
