Further deepening the rift in the high-capacity digital video disk world, Sega Enterprises Ltd has shunned the Philips Electronics NV-Sony Corp format favoured by all manufacturers with computer-related interests for the double-sided Toshiba Corp format, which has the backing of most of the entertainment industry, but is not upwards-compatible with today’s CD-ROMs. Sega said it sees Toshiba’s format as the superior system on several points, including data storage capacity. Sega also took into account that Hitachi Ltd, co-developer of Sega’s 32-bit Saturn player, is one of the seven proposing Toshiba’s format. Nintendo Co, staying aloof from the battle will stick with cartridges.
