Further adding to what is beginning to look like unsustainable additional chip capacity, Toshiba Corp is to invest $1,300m to build a new plant in Japan as part of its target to achieve output of next-generation memory and logic chips by 1998 that is 80% higher than current levels. Construction of the plant is due to start in April and operations are planned to start by the end of March 1998. Capacity will be 30,000 8 wafers a month.
