Yet another irritating standards battle is looming, this time over mini memory cards for digital cameras and the like. Four companies – Toshiba Corp, Sega Enterprises Ltd, Fuji Photo Film Co and Olympus Optical Co have come together to propose a rival to the alliance of 13 companies that back the miniature card developed by Advanced Micro Devices Inc, Sunnyvale. The absurdly- named solid state floppy disk card is 1.8 by 1.46 by 0.3 thick and is claimed to be cheaper to produce than the miniature card, which is also backed by Fujitsu Ltd, Sharp Corp and Intel Corp. The 2Mb cards are intended for digital cameras, games machines and portable information terminals.
