TOSHIBA PLANS US NETWORKING UNIT

By CBR Staff Writer

Toshiba Corp is to form a new networking venture company in the US with Japan’s conglomerate Mitsui & Co. The new unit will be based in Massachusetts and will market router equipment and develop related products with technical cooperation from Cisco Systems Inc. The venture will initially sell Toshiba’s Cell Switch Router (CSR), which is targeted at midsize companies, but it will cooperate with US research institutes and manufacturers to develop further products, according to sources quoted in the Japanese daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun. According to reports, the venture will also develop new CSR products based on Cisco technology for the release in the US by the end of the year. The company is aiming to sell into the ISP market as well as to telecoms carriers including AT&T Corp and NTT Corp. Sources claimed that Toshiba was looking for annual sales from the unit of $80m by the year 2000.
