Toshiba Corp says it plans to quadruple output in Asia over the next three years – but it means Asia apart from Japan, and it will be accelerating the hollowing out of the Japanese economy by moving production of consumer appliances, information systems and heavy electronic equipment from Japan. It aims to raise such Asian production to $7,000m in the year to March 1999, from $1,720m in 1995-96; Asian production outside Japan would then account for 51% of Toshiba’s global production, with favored countries being the ones with the most growth potential, seen by Toshiba as China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
