TOSHIBA INTRODUCES OPTICAL LOCAL AREA NETWORK

By CBR Staff Writer

Toshiba Corp has introduced an optical local area network running at 10Mbits per second and based on the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard: developed in conjunction with Nippon Telegraph & Telephone, it can support up to 33 channels and uses a passive optical coupler so that multiple channels do not interfere – electrical-to-optical conversion is at the device level; aiming it at the lower end of the optical network market, Toshiba hopes to sell 100 of the networks over three years.
