Toshiba Corp has a 3.5 floppy disk drive that uses vertical recording to store 4Mb using a format compatible with 1Mb drives: the PD-201 uses a barium ferrite as the recording medium and sells for about $312, and Toshiba looks to do 5,000 a month to start with, rising to 30,000 a month next year, and it will sell into a market that is growing at an estimated 50% to total 10m units this year.
