Toshiba Corp has announced development of a 3.5 floppy disk drive that uses servo head positioning to cram 16Mb on a single disk, recording at 30,000 bits per inch, and 540 tracks per inch. The average access time is claimed to be a competitive 83mS. The company says it will assess the likely customer demand before putting the thing into production, but intends to have it on the market within three years.
