Toshiba Corp, demanding more of its share of attention today, wants more of the North American market for semi-custom applications-specific integrated circuits, and has added three more chip design centres to the five it already has in the US: the new ones are in Boca Raton, Florida, where Siemens AG as well as IBM are resident, Chicago, and Toronto, Canada; one reason it needs all these design centres is that in January, its wholly owned subsidiary Iwate Toshiba Electronics Co Ltd will open a plant in Sunnyvale capable of turning out engineering samples of applications-specific chips, with full production capability by mid-year, and it will need the new facility to be kept as busy as possible.
