Toshiba is joining other technology firms such as Intel, BlackBerry and Cisco in carving out a special division to focus on the Internet of Things (IoT).

The Japanese electronics company has announced plans to combine its ICT departments and Cloud & Solution division from April 1st.

By bringing together ICT specialists and engineers from different departments, Toshiba hopes to develop and promote innovations in big data, the IoT, and cloud computing.

In particular, it will enable Toshiba to develop its common IoT platform by combining expertise across Toshiba’s business divisions including: Energy & Infrastructure, Community Solutions, Healthcare Systems & Services, Electronic Devices & Components, and Lifestyle Products & Services.

The platform will provide an infrastructure for connecting systems and devices over the internet, with the aim of creating new services and systems for the IoT.

The announcement comes after Toshiba released details of its latest real-time remote control system for IoT connections.

The cloud system, unveiled at the IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference, is designed to control more than 100,000 devices, such as home devices and sensors, by using a virtual server instance and WebSocket protocol.
