Toshiba model invites developers to drive smartwatch revolution

TZ1001 model carries enhanced features for sport and fitness.

By Alexander Sword

Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) has launched a smartwatch reference model to help designers evaluate the function and performance of software and technologies for wearable devices.

The TZ1001 model is fitted with an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and optical pulse sensor, allowing designers to prototype devices aimed at the active-lifestyle and wellbeing sectors.

The TZ1001MBG is additionally featured in the model. It is a single application processor with an accelerometer sensor to collect data and a processor to process this data, as well as flash memory for data storage and a Bluetooth Low Energy controller for data communication.

This Bluetooth Low Energy controller ensures low power performance to limit battery consumption, a key concern in wearable devices. The device carries a Toshiba Wireless Power Receiver IC TC7764WBG and Toshiba Fast Charger IC TC7710AWBG for WPC Qi wireless charging, as well as a micro USB port.

The model can be used in conjunction with Toshiba Healthcare Solution Development Platform, a sample user interface and companion Android sample app, allowing developers to run health-based applications.
