Keeping a close watch on our health has never been easier. With a wide range of health and fitness apps, we can now monitor everything from our diet, drinking habits, fitness levels and heart rate. Here's a pick of ten of the best, available on iPhone and Android.

10. For the sun savvy and those of us who’d rather not bake and burn, the Coppertone app is helpful tool in keeping us all safe in the rays. The app can calculate your location, provide the local forecast, calculate the day’s UV index and make the appropriate sunscreen suggestions based on your skin type. It will even ring an alarm when you’re due for a sunscreen top up. So that’s one less thing to worry about on the beach.

9. GoodGuide is the one stop shop for healthy eaters. Simply scan the barcode of a product and the app will give you a health rating for it, tell you how good it is for the environment and will give you a list of its ingredients, with picks of greener options available.

8. Couch to 5k won the 2012 award for the best healthcare and fitness app. Acting as a personal trainer, the app has three virtual coaches to choose from and builds up your fitness levels over a nine week period, hopefully getting you fit enough for a 5k by the end of your training.

7. The Alcohol Aware app keeps track of how much alcohol you consume on a daily basis, so you can monitor your drinking habits. The Plus version also provides a guide on how many calories is in each drink, so you can keep an eye on not just your health, but your waistline too.

6. For sufferers of back pain, this app could prove very useful on the road to recovery. BackCare contains 22 videos showing simple exercises that could help take away the pain from your back. It also has lots of useful information on back health and a pain diary feature to monitor your aches and pains. This information can be forwarded onto a back pain practitioner to help with diagnosis and treatment.

5. Health is not only physical; monitoring your mental health is also crucial. Moodscope is an app designed to measure and track your state of mind to help you lift your mood. The app allows you to observe all of the things that bring you down and back up again on a daily basis and helps you manage mood swings effectively.

4. iStepLog is the easy way to monitor your fitness, without ever having to step into a gym! Think of it as a mini pedometer in your pocket, the app keeps track of how much you move each day, calculating how many steps you take on a daily basis. It’s the simple way to get motivated to move more.

3. You should always keep an eye on your eyes, and with Eyexam, you can find out whether you have 20:20 vision or if a visit to the opticians is in order. The app can test colour perception, stigmatism and eye dominance.

The app’s calorie zone will automatically adjust itself depending on how active you are throughout the day.

It allows you to detect early skin conditions by monitoring moles on your body and tracking your UV exposure on a daily basis. The clever app works by taking a photo of your skin then analyses it, giving you your personalised skin health profile within seconds. You can then archive the images and keep track of your skin to ensure that there are no changes.
