TNT will launch an Internet track and trace system for General Motors’ consignments.

TNT already has a track and trace system, but these days this is regarded as an industry standard. This new launch is an Internet based track-and-trace home page dedicated to General Motors; the website allows GM to have online visibility of the order at every point in the transportation process.

The system is part of a new three-year contact, which covers the express delivery of spare parts across Europe, with responsibility for time-specific deliveries to over 4000 dealerships. Its launch illustrates the increasing importance of efficient information channels as part of the whole logistics package. The supply of information, which in this case is the provision of visibility, is especially important when dealing with time-sensitive products such as spare parts. In GM’s case, the track and trace system operates as a customer service tool, allowing dealers to keep their customers informed on the delivery of spare parts.

TNT has committed E2.3 million to technology expansion as part of a decision to enhance its IT infrastructure to cater for business growth and eCommerce initiatives. By offering more such dedicated technology solutions, it should continue its success in attracting new contracts.
