Tizen ahead of Blackberry in Smartphone OS race

News: Popularity in developing countries helped Tizen get ahead.

By CBR Staff Writer

Samsung’s Tizen operating system has managed to surpass Blackberry and Firefox OS in the global OS market race.

Tizen holds 0.3% of the market share followed by Blackberry which has only managed to capture 0.2% of the market while Firefox could not even make to the list.

According to the ‘Global Smartphone OS Market Share by Region : Q3 2015’ conducted by Strategy Analytics, Android is still the market leader with 84.1% of the devices running on it followed by Apple’s iOS which holds 13.6% of the market share.

Microsoft’s Windows OS accounted for the remaining 1.7% of the market share in Q3 2015.

With Tizen, Samsung introduced handsets that targeted the developing countries in South-East Asia.

Samsung introduced sub-$100 Samsung Z1 in India in January this year, followed by the release of the phone in neighboring countries Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Following the introduction of Z1, Samsung also introduced the advanced Samsung Z3 in India, which retailed for $130.

Apart from the entry level phones, Tizen powers Samsung smart TVs, and the Gear S2 smartwatch.

Prior to introducing its own OS, all of Samsung’s phones were powered by Alphabet-owned Android.

Strategy Analytics director Linda Sui wrote: "Given Samsung’s famous brand and well-established distribution channels in India and other emerging markets, Tizen OS is well-positioned to grow further during 2016.

"Still at the very early stages and it takes time to build up a decent ecosystem."
