IBM Corp’s Tivoli Systems Inc has become the latest company to sign up for Marimba Inc’s Castanet push technology vision and is working with the Palo Alto, California company to enable its applications management software, including the TME 10 Software distribution and TME 10 Inventory components to manage applications over the internet, rather than just intranets. In the second part of the agreement, Tivoli will market, sell and support Castanet, taking Marimba into its large enterprise customers, initially in the US. The two companies will work together to extend Tivoli’s Application Management Specification (AMS) set of APIs to include definitions based on the Open Software Description specification jointly proposed recently by Marimba and Microsoft Corp. OSD is a set of tags that describe software components, their versions, structure and relationships to other components. It is set to be reviewed shortly by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). AMS is a way of creating a set of management objects for an application so it can be managed across a network. Tivoli hopes that network will be the internet when its work with Marimba is complete. There is no end date but the work has started and the reseller part of the deal is effective immediately.
