TiVo expects billions from Google’s Motorola over patent violation

TiVo manufacture set-top boxes for Time Warner Cable

By CBR Staff Writer

TiVo is expecting billions of dollars in damages from Google’s Motorola unit over several patents suits relating to digital-video recording (DVR) technology.

TiVo said in its court filing that Motorola’s massive production of infringing DVRs dwarfs the numbers of alleged products listed in TiVo’s previous cases.

"TiVo’s damages claim is likely to run into the billions of dollars and TiVo requests apermanent injunction against the infringing Motorola DVRs," TiVo said.

"TiVo seeks its day in court asquickly as possible under a schedule that allows this case to be fully, fairly and efficiently adjudicated."

The US based firm has merged Google case with one involving Cisco Systems to deal with pre-trial issues that would accelerate the process and conserve resources.

All the involved firms manufacture set-top boxes for Time Warner Cable, which is a defendant in both patent lawsuits and TiVo is also planning to ban Motorola’s products that infringe its patents.

Bloomberg reported citing Motorola Mobility as saying that it also has patent-infringement claims against TiVo which are not related to Cisco.

Motorola Mobility would also ask TiVo to give up patent-licensing revenue it alleges was incorrectly derived from Motorola’s creations.
