IPS is as much a networking device as it is a security device, the company said in a statement. Customers should be confident that the IPS they buy will not adversely impact their network and will perform security functions accurately.

IPS is in many cases of intrusion detections systems, IDS, which over the years lost favor with administrators due to log overload and increasing false positives. Many buyers are wary of IPS because false positives result in blocked legitimate traffic.

TippingPoint said that Tomahawk simulates real-world IP traffic, by recording and playback actual traffic loads. Releasing it to open source will encourage adoption of the underlying IPS products, which TippingPoint sells, the firm said.
