Unisys Corp and Time Warner Inc’s Time Warner Cable arm have initiated a joint study Unisys spread spectrum technology for potential application to cable television networks in order to improve the quality of service and make more efficient use of frequencies in interactive networks. The Unisys spread spectrum technology, which was originally developed for the US Department of Defense, uses very low-power signals and scatters digital information so it cannot be intercepted: applying it to cable networks would not only secure information transmitted but will also enable them to carry multiple signals over the same communications band. Evaluation will be done by Cable Television Laboratories Inc.
