A voiceprint recognition technology that is claimed could revolutionise a string of business sectors from telecommunications to security and banking has been perfected by scientists at Rutgers University, Piscataway, New Jersey, United Press International reports. The speaker verification system is claimed to differentiate between the voices of identical twins and the team suggests it could render obsolete such everyday objects as keys, and guard against credit card fraud theft. A new firm, SpeakEz Inc, has negotiated with the university for the licence to exploit and market the technology, and says it has already been approached by companies that want to use it for entry and exit to control access to facilities such as power plants, hospitals, high technology manufacturing facilities and research labs. The firm suggests it could also be used to control whether children can order an R-rated movie on cable.
