Liquid crystal display manufacturer Three-Five Systems Inc of the US has opened its first Chinese manufacturing plant in Beijing. It will be the company’s third facility worldwide with the other two in the US and the Philippines.

Glass substrates produced at the US factory are to be shipped to both the Beijing and Philippines plants for completion. Three-Five, North America’s largest designer and manufacturer of LCDs, is one of the first foreign enterprises to be selected for preferential treatment, including import tariff breaks, as a reward for locating in China’s high-tech hub of Zhongguancun.

Three-Five’s main product line is small LCDs for cellphones for which China is the world’s fastest-growing market. The company’s chief manufacturing officer, Carl Derrington said the plant will be able to make up to 14 million display modules a year.
