There are three contenders for a new high-speed Serial SCSI interface – IBM Corp’s Serial Storage Architecture, Fibre Channel, which IBM has been working on with Hewlett-Packard Co, and something called P-1394, which is new to us, but is described as a multimedia interface, and on September 16, Dataquest is staging what it calls a Serial SCSI Interface Shoot-Out at its San Jose headquarters, with formal presentation of the interfaces and an open discussion of their comparative merits: booked to speak are Jan Szatkowski from IBM, backing Serial Storage Architecture, Michael Salas from Texas Instruments Inc touting the merits of P-1394, and Dave Anderson from Seagate Technology Inc putting the case for Fibre Channel; George Peck from Storage Dimensions Inc, Bob Williamsen, Sun Microsystems Inc and Alan Skidmore, Compaq Computer Corp will join a panel discussion.
