Northern Telecom Ltd, US Sprint Communications and US West Inc have been demonstating a key component of the proposed US Nationwide Emergency Telecommunications Service – a software module for telephone company switching systems which redirects priority calls around network failure points at computer speeds without operator intervention: the Switch Internal Module software was demonstrated by Northern Telecom as part of an $8m contract with the National Communications System – a confederation of federal government agencies concerned with National Security and Emergency Preparedness telecommunications, which is expected to award a multi-million dollar Emergency system integration contract soon.
