The idea behind the deal is that Elite will be combined with West, a company that provides integrated information services for lawyers as part of the Thomson Legal & Regulatory market Group. Thomson believes that the combination will put it in a better position to provide the next generation of software to meet the needs of legal practices.

Elite has 400 staff and 800 clients in legal and professional services. It operates at the top end of the market and claims to supply a third of the top US law firms and half of the top UK law firms. In the year to December 31, it reported net income of $4.5m on revenue of $77.7m.
