About 72% of UK citizens agree that social media sites like Twitter should allow permission for usage only if people provide a fully verified name and address.
While 14% oppose and equal percentage were unsure, about 82% of those aged 60 or over are not in favour of social media anonymity and 54% of 18-25 year olds also agree with the elders.
This study by YouGov comes on the heels of a series of cases of social media abuse, including abusive Twitter messages being sent to high-profile women.
When asked whether action should be taken against abusers, 62% say ‘Social media sites like Twitter should listen to people who are complaining and take action to reduce abusive and threatening messages,’ as against 29%, who say that ‘People who are complaining about abusive and threatening messages on social media sites like Twitter should just stop using it if they don’t like it.’
Meanwhile, the founders of Ask.fm have agreed to identify the users who posted abusive messages to Hannah Smith through their computers’ IP addresses.
