With the launch by Hewlett-Packard Co of a 1.3 disk drive (see front page), ‘spose that means the joke is just about on us: about a decade ago, Computer Systems News ran a set of spoof predictions for the year, and among them was a suggestion that IBM Corp would come out with a 1 disk drive, made from the annuli punched out of the middle of 5.25 platters to take the spindle; we ran the forecast as a humourous tailpiece and were most amused when Logica Plc rang us asking for more details; hang on a few more months, fellahs, we’re almost there now…
