Our story that Compaq Computer Corp was on the brink of a deal that would see it buying a stake in MIPS Computer Systems Inc to cement an agreement to use MIPS R-series RISCs in future workstation products (CI No 1,600) finally got into the market on Thursday last week when MIPS shares jumped $2.875 or 26.4% to $13.75 in very heavy volume of 692,000 shares compared with a daily trading average of about 147,900, and the Dow Jones newswire attributed the rise to hopes of a Compaq-MIPS deal: the wire quoted Alex Brown & Sons analyst Mark Stahlman saying he expected Compaq to introduce MIPS-based products in 1992 – Brown says he is encouraged by recent reports that Compaq is close to resolving its entry stategy into the workstation market.
