City newcomers are not accustomed to having to get rid of people, and some decidedly unseasonal tales are coming out of the Square Mile, suggesting they show much less finesse in firing than they do in hiring: seems one New York investment bank read out of list of names over the tannoy with the message these people no longer have jobs with us – you have 15 minutes to leave the premises; another US firm sent many staff home early one day, called the rest into a meeting and told them those who have gone home have jobs – the rest of you are fired; and a number of employees at a Japanese firm found that the traditional envelopes used to hand out Christmas bonuses instead contained only their P45s (pink slips).
