THE VATICAN SENDS FOR IBM TO HELP IT OUT WITH ITS RARE BOOKS LIBRARY ACCESS PROJECT

IBM Corp and the Vatican have announced an 18-month joint project to create a multimedia database of scanned images from the Vatican’s library of rare books, and to test the feasibility of distributing the images electronically. In addition, the project team will convert the Vatican Library’s pre-1985 card catalogue of two million entries into an electronic database. Issues of cost, protection of distributed images and permissions management will also be explored, IBM and the Vatican reported.
