If there were a Polish economy to wreck, the hunger of state agencies for personal computers would be well on the way to wrecking it: according to the Wall Street Journal, any savvy and ambitious Pole who can lay his hands on a few hundred dollars spends them on IBM clones which he sells at vastly inflated prices in zlotys to middlemen – the final user according to the necessary export documents – who then batches them up and sells them to agencies of the government, which pays the bill by printing more zlotys, so that according to the Journal, Amstrad Plc Personalikes account for 70% of the air freight between London and Warsaw.
