Paradoxically, it appears that what was clearly a bare-knuckle bust-up between Carlo de Benedetti and the top brass at AT&T and on which side is Vittorio Cassoni, who transferred from Olivetti to run AT&T Data Systems – will strengthen rather than weaken AT&T’s chances of being chosen as Italtel SpA technicial partner for telecommunications equipment, on the basis that had AT&T taken effective control of Olivetti as it appears to have wanted (CI No 907), a wave of Italian chauvinism would have ruled the AT&T initiative out of court.
