THE IBM PRODUCT LANGUAGE

By CBR Staff Writer

What is the reason that IBM insists on coming up with a name no one else uses for commonplace properties like disk drives and processors (CI No 1,006)? We have a nasty suspicion that the aim is to enable the IBM salesman to put data processing managers who have never before used IBM equipment at a disadvantage by coming out with IBM Newspeak like DASD and CEC, so that the poor DPM is left wondering whether to admit his ignorance and ask what the hell the guy is talking about, or keep quiet and hope to grasp the point in due course.
