The relative failure of Lotus Development Corp in the Apple Macintosh market – it announced that it was abandoning its Modern Jazz program this week (CI No 950) – is underlined by the fact that Jazz and Modern Jazz were together expected to account for no more than $2m sales this year, and the company did $395.6m in total last year; by contrast, the Mac accounts for about $100m sales a year at Microsoft Corp and $35m at Ashton-Tate; the traditional Jazz will remain on the market, but not be enhanced, and Lotus says that it may make acquisitions in the Macintosh software arena to improve its position.
