Telecom Fiji has added Israel-based Gilat Satellite Networks’s SkyAbis cellular backhaul system to its satellite communications network to enhance mobile service.
Gilat claims that the addition of its SkyAbis cellular backhaul system has enabled Telecom Fiji’s (TFL’s) expansion of CDMA services to regions where it was not economically feasible before.
The expansion followed TFL’s successful deployment and operation of a Gilat SkyEdge network which provides a number of diverse services and applications in the remote Fiji islands.
According to Gilat, the SkyAbis is a prepackaged system for cellular backhaul, based on the SkyEdge multi-service platform. It enables operators to deploy hybrid networks that extend the reach of their terrestrial and cellular infrastructure to remote communities. SkyAbis features traffic optimization and bandwidth allocation for CDMA/GSM backhaul, with much higher space-segment efficiencies when compared to SCPC.
