The Network of Mobile Election Monitors (NMEM) has called on its volunteers to vote and send in two reports via text on the conduct of the polls in their location. The data is then analyzed before reports are issued to the public, monitoring groups and The Independent National Electoral Commission.
The BBC reports that NMEM is using a free system called Frontline SMS to keep track of all the texts. It was originally developed to let conservationists contact communities in South Africa’s National Parks.
NMEN said that it does not know how many of Nigeria’s 30 million mobile phone users will take part.
