It is by no means certain that the thing will ever be built, but if it is, Texas, and in particular Waxahachie, 25 miles south of Dallas, has won the fierce bidding to be the home for the US Department of Energy’s Superconducting Super Collider, a 53-mile round underground oval lined with 10,000 magnets to accelerate protons (CI No 644): the thing will cost $4,400m to construct, and directly create up to 2,500, and more indirectly.
