Texas Instruments Inc has signed up with Sun Microsystems Inc to license EmbeddedJava and PersonalJava for its thriving digital signal processing business. The agreement will enable it to deliver Java capabilities on any TI processor platform, including its TMS320 family of digital signal processors, for equipment such as digital cellular phones, pagers and wireless local loop terminals. Multimedia-based services such as wireless internet access and video phones will drive this market, and digital signal processing and software will be the key underlying technologies to make this happen TI says. The company’s Wireless Communications Business Unit plans to offer Java-enabled products based on its digital baseband platform some time in 1998, the company said.
