Texas Instruments Inc isn’t waiting for the European Commission to dump on chipmakers that only assemble circuits within the Community (CI No 1,090), and yesterday announced that it has chosen the near-virgin territory for foreign chipmakers of Italy for a $250m semiconductor wafer fabrication facility, to be based in Avezzano. Construction will start shortly, with initial output expected in late 1990 and full production by mid-1991. The new plant will at first produce 4M-bit MOS memory chips but will also be able to manufacture advanced MOS logic parts. Texas says the plant will employ over 500 staff at full production.
