TEXAS INSTRUMENTS TO COLLABORATE WITH SUN ON DEVELOPING NEW SPARC GENERATION

By CBR Staff Writer

In addition to second sourcing the version of the Sparc RISC made by Cypress Semiconductor Inc and using it in its future high-end business computer systems, Texas Instruments Inc will collaborate with Sun Microsystems Inc on developing the second generation Sparc, using its EPIC-IIB sub-micron fabrication technology: the agreement with Cypress involves the latter second-sourcing the Texas 74ACT8847 maths co-processor chip, which is optimised for use with the Sparc; Texas also says it plans to apply advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence to future commercial Unix systems, particularly for the solution of complex problems in managing operations of a business.
