Texas Instruments adds new gear to OMAP3530 processor

Speed upgrades to create more headroom to add features and custom software

By CBR Staff Writer

Texas Instruments has upgraded the OMAP3530 applications processor and evaluation module (EVM), giving designers more scope to run new application features and additional headroom to add their own IP.

The new OMAP3530 processor, which features a 720 MHz ARM Cortex – A8 core and a 520 MHz TMS320C64x+ DSP, enables users to gain faster access to databases, spreadsheets, presentations, e-mail, audio and video attachments, web browsing and video conferencing applications, TI said.

According to TI, the new single-chip processor supports faster boot times suitable for applications such as portable infotainment, Point-of-Sale (POS) devices, web tablets and single board computers. The 720 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 core provides 1400 Dhrystone million instructions per second, while the 520 MHz C64x+ DSP provides more headroom to optimise quality audio and video codecs and custom IP.

In addition, the new processor features POWERVR SGX subsystem for 3D graphics acceleration to support display and gaming effects, a comprehensive power and clock-management scheme that enables high-performance, low-power operation and low-power standby capabilities, and pin-for-pin compatible with its OMAP35x devices enabling OEMs to create a product portfolio based on the single platform.

The OMAP35x EVM comes with Linux and WinCE 6.0 plus associated binaries and peripheral drivers to develop multimedia applications that can be ported across different devices in the OMAP35x family, the company added.
