Tesla rolls out autopilot mode for cars

News: The company is rolling the update over-the-air.

By Nitin Kumar

Electric automaker Tesla has launched Tesla Version 7.0, software which enables cars to have an "autopilot" mode.

The software is featured in the Model S and new Model X, with the software enabling the cars to automatically steer down the highway, change lanes, and adjust speed in response to traffic.

According to Tesla, the autopilot functions are designed to run in a similar way as it does in an airplane.

Tesla said that it has been working on self driving technology since last October and equipped Model S with forward radar, a forward-looking camera, 12 long-range ultrasonic sensors, and a digitally-controlled electric assist braking system.

The company highlighted that the autopilot is designed to help drivers get rid of tedious and potentially dangerous aspects of road travel.

Tesla has added more functional apps to help monitor rides and the instrument panel is designed to be more focused on the driver.

Tesla is one of the automakers to be working on self driving technology, while other major automakers including Daimler, BMW, Volvo and tech giant Google have introduced the technology and have started testing them.

However, unlike Google’s self driving car the latest update to the Tesla models will not make it a self driving vehicle, as Tesla said: "While truly driverless cars are still a few years away."
