Teradata says the new release of Teradata Warehouse 7.0, which the company stressed shipped according to its original schedule, delivers one of the most powerful hardware and software data warehousing solutions on the market. Vickie Farrell, Teradata’s warehouse marketing vice president said that the Teradata Warehouse 7.0 is the most aggressive release to date, and provides enhanced performance and new functionality that is unmatched in the market.
Teradata Warehouse 7.0 is comprised of several components, including the flagship Teradata Database V2R5.0, Teradata Tools and Utilities 7.0, and the NCR 5350 Server. These components are complemented by Teradata applications, a range of Teradata-certified partner technology (such as Ab Initio, Ascential Software Corp, Brio Software Inc, Informatica Corp, Hummingbird Ltd and MicroStrategy Corp), and a new set of professional services.
The 7.0 release bundles in an impressive 150 enhancements. For example, the revamped optimizer and execution engine in Teradata Database V2R5.0 dramatically improves throughput and scalability of all workloads including strategic and tactical workloads. With the combination of the new hardware and software, Teradata Warehouse 7.0 can provide performance improvements of up to 110% over the prior release claims Farrell. Other enhancements focus mainly on warehouse availability, security, privacy enforcement, and ease of administration.
Teradata Warehouse 7.0 also come with two new consulting-driven solution offerings built by Teradata Professional Services – Application Performance Management and Workload Performance Management – that are designed to let customers leverage new enhancements in 7.0. For example, the Workload Management service exploits new Teradata Warehouse features to evaluate and optimize performance based on time-specific queries and mixed workloads using historic and current data. In this way simple operational analysis, which is concerned with daily activities, is effectively managed alongside industrial strength data mining queries.
Teradata has always targeted big-iron data warehousing projects where performance and scalability are key software requirements. Teradata technology provides the foundation for some of the largest data warehouses ever built – such as SBC Communications (around 125 Terabytes) and Sears, Roebuck and Co (around 70 Terabytes).
