TEN COMPANIES FORM GRAPHICS COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES

By CBR Staff Writer

Ten companies, including Ascii and Hitachi, have invested in a new company formed to do research and development into high-speed processing techniques for digital video communications systems: called Graphics Communication Technologies, it is capitalised at $1.45m and Foundation Technology Research Promotion Center will hold 70%, Ascii 6.52%, Hitachi 4.5%, with the rest shared by other companies such as Mitsui, Kyocera, and Tokyo Power; the first project will be research into viewdata systems with 64Kbps transmission rates, and while Kokusai Denshin Denwa already has a prototype system that appears to achieve 64Kbps, the apparent speed is achieved by use of data compression techniques.
