Akron, Ohio-based handheld terminals specialist Telxon Corp has launched a wireless remote scanner into the retail market. The PTC-921 Wireless Remote Scanning Terminal can be used to verify prices, manage inventory and scan bar codes. It communicates via Telxon’s MicroRadio network and has a range of 50 to 100 feet. The integrated laser scanner recognises bar codes and has been designed to be used with point-of-sale registers in retail outlets. It has also launched the MRC-921, a microbase controller that provides interactive data communications from multiple PTC-921 scanners to personal computers, point-of-sale registers and other host devices via a keyboard wedge, laser port or standard RS-232. The two products are being aimed at small convenience and speciality stores. And the company announced that IBM Corp has qualified its WS-4680 system for wireless communications, which actually contains portions of code developed by IBM, for use with IBM 4680 controllers and 4683 point-of-sale termin als. Telxon added that its integrated Dataspan spread spectrum board and software enable the 4680 store controller to interface to a single network for compatibility between the companies’ products. The software provides a wireless store environment of wireless handhelds and 4683 terminals. Telxon, which makes wireless and portable transaction systems, suffered major losses in the 1992 to 1993 fiscal year but made a profit throughout last year and said at the beginning of the year that its third-quarter earnings would be strong.
