Telia AB, the Swedish state-owned phone company formerly known as Televerket last month, has now been granted a draft operating licence for telecommunications services in the UK: the International Simple Resale Licence allows Telia to offer international telephone service between the UK, Australia, Canada, and Sweden and mandates the use of a British Telecommunications Plc link in the UK to connect callers to its international network; Telia said that its low rates and costs, which it said were down to half the UK average, made it confident it would remain competitive both inside and outside Sweden.
